Nissan: 40 Years In North America

The North American market has seen some bold changes by Nissan over the years. Originally imported under the Datsun name, Nissan cars in Canada and the US made the switch over to the new name in the early 1980s and the company hasn’t been the same since. A broader line up and the introduction of the luxurious Infiniti brand in the late 1980s changed the face of Nissan tremendously. The winners are consumers everywhere who can get a great vehicle for a fair price.

It was in 1965 when the first Datsuns arrived in Canada. Who could forget the 1600cc 510 wagon with a 4 speed manual transmission? The only thing that could kill this car was rust and a rust bucket it was at that. Or, how about the 620 pick up? A great little hauler that is in a league of its own. My personal favorite was the 720 pick up truck equipped with a diesel engine. A good, sturdy truck that really sipped fuel.

Today’s Nissan line up is a far cry from the cars that dotted the landscape during the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. For consumers that is probably a good thing too. Today’s line up still offers glimpses of the original Datsuns with the Sentra reminding some of the old B210, but about ten times more comfortable at that too. The Altima, Maxima, and the revived 350Z round out the car line up and when you add in all the SUVs and trucks that Nissan now sells the Japanese automaker has something for everyone.

Consumers are maintaining their Nissans/Datsuns with premium Nissan parts and accessories. Your dealer will have what you need, but remember the prices you pay for parts through the dealership will be the prevailing retail rate. Some national auto parts chains will have a decent selection, but they may have difficulty hunting down the rare Datsun or early Nissan part for you.

A new choice for consumers is auto parts wholesalers, particularly those who sell online. Prices are usually much lower because wholesalers buy direct from leading manufacturers including Bosch, K&N, Hella, Monroe, Covercraft, and others. Still, make sure that the retailer is based in Canada and not charging you outrageous shipping and duty charges for parts shipped in from the US or elsewhere. The selection they offer to you should be great, parts stocked must meet or exceed OEM requirements, and customer service should be just a click of the mouse and/or a toll free phone number away.

Be careful of retailers specializing in generic Nissan parts as counterfeit auto parts are a big problem in North America. Always learn in advance what the company’s shipping, return, and warranty policies are before making your purchase.

Affordable Performance The All New Nissan Skyline R33 Gts25-t ………

In 1993 the all new Nissan Skyline R33 GTS25-T replaced the successful R32 GTS- T. Little brother to the all conquering GTR the GTS25-T is more affordable and still a thrilling ride. It features a more modern new shape with smooth lines rather than the sharp edges of the previous model. The new looks were debatable some liked the newer styling of the R33 and some preferred the harder edges of the R32.

On the road with the R33 the first thing you notice is how smooth the R25DET engine is power delivery is linier and the car pulls hard from 3000rpm to the 7000 rpm redline. The manual coupe version will propel you from 0-100 in 6.18 seconds and complete the quarter in 14.4. Maximum power is 187kw at 6400 and a max torque 295nm at 4800.

The RB25DET is a ripper and featured technology ahead of it time. The 2.5 liter turbo intercooled straight 6 features a twin cam head with variable valve timing on the intake side.

Handling of the coupe is great with a good balance between comfort and a sports like feel. The rear of the car steered by a system called HICAS which works by calculating the speed and angle of the car through the corners. This feature seems to minimize under- steer and kept the car flat through the corner.

The rear on the car is equipped with a viscous LSD and steps out ever so progressively when pushing hard. This makes the car easy to control but if pushed to hard it would be easy to loose the rear end. The skyline is a medium size coupe weighing in at 1360kg and when cornering its a great drive but not quiet as direct or nibble though the bends as the lighter R32 was. But light suspension modifications improve handling significantly.

In Australia a good series 1 GTS25-T can be picked up for around $17,000 and a series 2 for around 20,000. With standard features including electric windows and climate control I thinks it is great value for money. With light modifications to the engine and suspension this car can be turned into a street weapon. For more information I recommend visiting.

Altima Hybrid: Nissan’s Blend Of Style, Performance And Fuel Economy

Nissan Motors, a budding Japanese automaker, offers the auto industry a distinct hybrid that blends the automaker’s style, performance and fuel economy. The hybrid reflects Nissan manufacturing tradition while adding updated auto features to set it apart from the traditional hybrid on the road.

The all-new Altima hybrid, Nissan’s first entry in the hybrid electric vehicle market, flaunts distinctive styling, a sport-oriented suspension, powerful 4-cylinder engine and spacious interior. But the automaker did not stop its endeavor to improve the hybrid. “The Altima Hybrid offers all the style, convenience, comfort, quality feel and performance technology features and highlights of the next-generation 2007 Altima sedan, while offering the added benefits of improved fuel economy and reduced emissions,” said Bill Bosley, the vice president and general manager, Nissan Division.

Nissan completes the hybrid’s features by adding excellent fuel economy through a hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain. The powertrain is mated to the 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine and Xtronic? CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) that allows the hybrid to increase fuel economy while maintaining low tailpipe emissions. The hybrid’s EPA fuel economy is estimated at 42 mpg City and 36 mpg Highway. It is rated as an Advanced Technology-Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle (AT-PZEV) and emits almost no harmful emissions.

Bosley added, “Combined with Altima’s standard 20-gallon fuel tank, Altima Hybrid has a projected driving range of up to 700 miles between fill-ups. More importantly, it drives just like any other Nissan ? with smooth acceleration, responsive handling and a seamless delivery of power under almost all driving conditions.”

The Nissan Altima Hybrid features sophisticated standard equipment that includes 16-inch alloy wheels, power windows/door locks, an Intelligent Key with Push Button Ignition system, 6-speaker AM/FM/CD system with auxiliary audio input jack, Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), Traction Control System (TCS), Anti-lock Braking System (abs), and dual-zone automatic temperature control. The hybrid is also equipped with electrically powered A/C that continues to supply cooling even when the gasoline engine is stopped. Other auto accessories like the Nissan brake dust shield, steps and door handles could be added to enhance style and efficiency of the car.

To boost safety, the automaker equipped the car with the Advanced Air Bag System (AABS), front seat-mounted side-impact supplemental air bags for chest protection, roof-mounted curtain side-impact supplemental air bags for front and rear outboard occupant head protection and front seat Active Head Restraints.

“The new Altima has been a tremendous success since it was launched in November, helping fuel record Altima sales of nearly 25,000 units in December 2006, marking an increase of nearly 40 percent over the previous year,” noted Bosley. “The new Altima Hybrid expands the choices available for our buyers, keeping Altima at the forefront of the segment in terms of value, performance, quality, technology and selection.”

Nissan Altima Hybrid’s starting Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price is $24,400. It is on sale now in the eight states that have adopted California emissions regulations – California, Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont. The hybrid sedan meets the requirements for the Alternative Motor Vehicle Credit, thus qualifies for a tax credit of $2,350.
